Dolpo is an unexplored paradise of western Nepal. This remote region receives very few travelers making it one of the quietest and serene treks in Nepal. Rich in culture and bio-diversity this region resembles the plateau of Tibet and has a rich Buddhist tradition flourishing that can be seen in the many small monasteries, Chorten and the colorful prayer flags scattered all over. The Short Dolpo Trek entitles us to witness the magic of snowcapped peaks, quaint little settlements, and rich wildlife in this region. The biggest highlight of the Short Dolpo Trek is the Phoksundo Lake, which is a beautiful lake which is considered sacred by the Nepalese. The Nilgiri (7,061m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and Annapurna (8,091m) will be giving us their company on this trek.
Our journey begins as we head to Nepalgunj followed by Jhupal. From Jhupal, the trek begins and we make way to Dunai. From Dunai, we make a gradual ascent to Chhepka village and then to the serene vicinity around the Phoksundo Lake. The lake also holds sacred values in Hindu religion and thus is of grave importance to the trekkers and locals alike.
Dolpo was unknown to the rest of the world until it soared into popularity when it was featured in the Oscar-nominated movie, Caravan. Though vastly beautiful, the residents of this region are isolated from the rest of the world and live in harsh conditions. This region is the largest district in Nepal and boasts of incredibly rich flora and fauna, many medicinal plants are found in this region, such as Yarsa Gumba, which has high demand in the international market as well. The people of this region are knowledgeable in traditional medicines and use various natural techniques to heal themselves. This region almost gives a forbidden kingdom sort of feel to it and is a wonderful way to explore Nepal.
