Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek offers lush green forests, mesmerizing waterfalls, groves of rhododendrons, and magnificent vistas of mountain scenery. Along the way, beautiful Sherpa villages filled with outstanding culture dot the landscape. The warm hospitality from the local people of this region makes one feel welcome and the beautiful journey from the midland slopes through the beaten tracks into the Himalaya will be unforgettable.

Our tour begins with visiting cultural and religiously significant places in the Kathmandu Valley. After spending time in the ancient valley sightseeing and shopping, the tour turns to the trekking portion of the adventure. The trek from Jiri to Phakding offers peaceful serenity with its quiet environments and calm scenes. It includes going through small villages all the while the trail descends into deep river valleys, and up onto steep slopes sometimes covered in terraced fields and tiny homes. Each person you meet along the way is happy to smile and say hello. In Namche Bazaar also known as a tourist hub, we take a day off to relax and wander around the town. It will also be an important day to acclimatize the body as we gain in elevation. A highlight of the Everest Base Camp Trek is entering Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This region is also the domain of the famous Sherpa people and there are plenty of opportunities to interact and experience their rich cultural heritage. Towns such as Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Tengboche where the largest monastery is found in the whole Khumbu Region. Another incredible draw to this trek is the climb of Kala Patthar (5,550m). Steep, and challenging, yet completely worthwhile for the arresting views you will find of Mt Everest (8,848 m). Passing through the beautiful monasteries and seeing the fine carvings on the stone of the Mani walls gives the visitor a touch of the richness of the Buddhist faith. Also, the trails have been walked on by legends of mountaineering such as Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay who climbed Mt. Everest (8848m) in 1953.  Trekkers can feel the same sense of accomplishment walking in their footsteps.

The trek is usually moderate, though at times can be more challenging. Managing the symptoms that come along with an increase in elevation such as feeling more tired quickly will most likely be the biggest challenge trekker’s face. February-May and September-December are the best months to travel, as summer (June-August) is the monsoon season, and winter (December- February) extremely cold, and snowy.

Day 1
Arrive Kathmandu (1,300m)

Welcome to the Himalayan country of Nepal. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, our travel representative will welcome you and assist you in your transfer to the hotel in Kathmandu. After some time to relax and refresh from your journey, a representative will meet you and accompany you to the welcome dinner in one of the typical Local Nepalese restaurants in the heart of Kathmandu. You will be briefed about your trip and overnight at Hotel.

Day 2
Kathmandu valley sightseeing & trek preparation (1,300m)

Today is for sightseeing the beautiful Kathmandu valley and its significant religious and cultural places with one of our expert guides. You will visit famous and historical sites of Kathmandu such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath all of which are cultural treasures. The group will enjoy private transport throughout the day of sightseeing making a stop for lunch at an authentic neighborhood Nepali eateries.

Day 3
Kathmandu – Shivalaya (1,767m): 8-10 hrs bus drive.

We begin the day with a morning drive and cross the Sun Koshi River, after which we arrive at Mode. It's picturesque drive through rural Nepal with the terraced field, small villages particular to Nepal, and great perspectives of the eastern Himalayan including Ganesh Himal (7422m), Langtang Lirung (7227m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m) and numerous other snow-capped peaks. Finally, we arrive at the riverside village of Shivalaya. Stay overnight at the Hotel in Shivalaya.

Day 4
Shivalaya – Bhandar (2,200m): 5-6 Hrs

From Shivalaya the trek begins, and will quickly cross a stream. Then the long ascent to the Sangbadanda Pass begins. The trail climbs steeply in the forests, crosses another stream and at last leads to Deurali. This pass now signifies we are entering a culturally Tibetan area due to noteworthy clusters of rocks with delicately etched Tibetan script on them, along with excellent mountain vistas. There is also a clearing which allows us to view the Likhu Khola Valley and Bhandar, an extensive Sherpa settlement far in a hanging valley. The trail drops around two hours to arrive at Bhandar.

Day 5
Bhandar–Sete (2,520m): 5-6 Hrs

The trail drops down to the Likhu Khola and crosses this glacial river and onto Kenja. The initial portion of this upcoming climb is very steep and leads to Sete, and a solitary stupa lining the trail. We proceed through the towns occupied by the Sherpa people.

Day 6
Sete–Junbesi (2,680m): 6-7 Hrs.

Today the trek starts with a long and steady climb to Lamjura. Then from the Lamjura Pass, you saunter down to Tragdobuk (2,860 m), and onto the beautiful Sherpa town of Junbesi. Stay overnight at a hotel in Junbesi.

Day 7
Explore Junbesi surrounding include Thubten Choling Monastery

With its alluring hotels and bazaar-like atmosphere, Junbesi is a decent place to take a rest day and there is a fascinating stroll to a Buddhist community in the surroundings. Nearby the extensive yellow-topped Stupa in town, the Junbesi School is one of the biggest Hillary schools, with in excess of 300 students taking classes essential for higher education. The other way the valley of Junbesi Khola keeps running toward Thupten Choling religious community. An extensive Tibetan cloister established by the venerated Trulsuk Rinpoche who came to Nepal from Rongbuk Gompa, the monastery near Everest Base Camp on the north side of Everest in Tibet.

Day 8
Junbesi – Nunthala (2,250m): 5-6 hrs treks

On day eight, upon arriving at 3,080 m Everest gradually starts to come into view. From Junbesi the trail winds slowly to Salung. Leaving Salung, the descends to the Ringmo Khola and onto Ringmo. We then come to a lovely apple plantation, and here the Apple House offers squeezed apple cider, apple pie, and rakshi (local rice alcohol). After treating ourselves to the delights of the Apple House, we climb to achieve Trakshindo Pass (3,071 m). Now time to make our last descent of the day pass the religious community of a similar name, and onto Nunthala at 2,440 m.

Day 9
Nunthala–Bupsa (2,360m): 5-6 hrs treks.

From Nunthala our way descend down to the Dudhkoshi River Bridge and the trail lead through terraced fields and small houses and reach Jubing (1,667m/5467ft). From Jubing the trail proceeds to the town of Khari Khola and we will push on up the lofty slope to Bupsa.

Day 10
Bupsa–Ghat (2,590m): 5-6 hrs treks.

Today, our trail climbs consistently through forests, and if you are lucky you may see monkeys amongst the trees. Also amongst the trees, we start to get glimpses of Mt. Khumbila (5761m) and Mt. Cho Oyu (8188m). Keep moving up to a cliff, at which point there we will see a Paiya (Chitok), a Sherpa sculpture totally encompassed by woodland. The trail undulates for an hour toward a little tributary beside Dudh Koshi at Surkhe. A level trail along the center of town is joined by another trail from Lukla to Everest Base Camp. The trail then proceeds to cling tightly to the side of the Dudh Koshi valley passing towns and intersects the Thado Koshi before heading to Ghat where we will overnight.

Day 11
Ghat-Namche Bazaar (3,440 m): 5-6 hrs treks.

On day 11, the trail begins a climb to Phakding. Traverse the Dudh Koshi waterway and trek through a delightful pine forest as you experience moving through to a different ecological zone from sub-tropical to mixed coniferous forests, all the while keeping to the Dudh Koshi River. We cross numerous suspension bridges and pass more Sherpa villages such as Bengkar, Chhamuwa, Monjo, and Jorsalle. We will now enter the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint with peaceful perspectives of glistening Mt. Thamserku (6608m). The trail continues to proceed through the Dudh Koshi riverbed to the conjunction of Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi. The trail climbs steadily and crosses the high Tenzing-Hilary suspension bridge. Walking along you now can see Mt. Everest (8848m) next to the Nuptse-Lhotse edge. After 5-6 hours of hiking, we reach Namche Bazaar where we will stay overnight in a hotel.

Day 12
Acclimatization Day - Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

Known as the 'Passage to Everest' we will spend today here in Namche Bazaar keeping in mind the end goal to allow for acclimatization due to the ascent in elevation. We will visit the Sherpa Cultural Museum and get more information about Sherpa culture and traditions. Stay overnight at the guesthouse.

Day 13
Namche Bazaar-Tengboche (3,870m): 5- 6 Hrs

After breakfast, we trek towards Tengboche. It is a simple stroll from Namche to Phunke Tenga. After achieving Phunke, we rise towards Tengboche, a town that houses the extremely well known Tengboche Monastery which is the largest monastery in the whole Khumbu Region. Situated in the midst of the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), has a 360-degree perspective of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse (7861m), Lhotse (8414m), Ama Dablam(6856m) and Thamserku(6623m). Stay overnight at Tengboche.

Day 14
Tengboche-Dingboche (4,360m): 5-6 Hrs

This beautiful trail will descend down to Debuche, crossing the Imja River before scaling to Pangboche. We are well on the way to reach the upper Pangboche trail as it affords a more unblemished perspective of the Himalayas. From here onwards, the walk is genuinely direct as we enter the Imja Valley. The valley progressively unfurls as we approach the conjunction of the Lobuche River. We drop into the waterway and ascend to Dingboche. Upon arriving in Dingboche, we are welcomed by a wonderful exhibit of fields encased by stone dividers to protect the grain, buckwheat, and potatoes from the chilly breeze and munching creatures.

Day 15
Acclimatization day in Dingboche

This is another exploration and acclimatization day where we can relax and feel embraced by nature. We'll explore local vistas and stupa's and we can take a day hike to either Nangkartshang Gompa or Chhukhung Valley for great views of Makalu (8463m), Lhotse (8414m), Tawoche (6367m) and Ama Dablam (6856m).

Day 16
Dingboche–Lobuche (4910m): 7km, 5-6 hrs

Today we walk steeply up towards the Dusa Village by seeing Mt. Nangkar Tshan (5616m) and Mt. Pokalde (5806m) in the background to our east. Continuing ahead, we reach Thokla Pass (4830m) and we will see Khumbu Glacier. Then walking ahead we finally arrive at Lobuche.

Day 17
Lobuche - Gorakshep (5,140m)-Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,594 ft): Gorak Shep: 8-10 Hrs

The trek today takes the trail to Everest Base Camp past Gorak Shep Lake. Continuing on, we come across the Indian Army Mountaineers' Memorial. Now we are in the alpine zone, and at times the trail can be hard to recognize, so for safety, it is important to be in good contact with your guide. The walk can feel strenuous due to the high altitude, but a slow steady pace will help to reach the destination comfortably. We pass through rocky dunes, moraines, and streams before reaching the Everest Base Camp. Upon reaching the Everest Base Camp, we see tents of mountaineers that stand out in bright colors against the stark mountain landscape. Nuptse (7861m), Khumbutse (6636m) and Pumo Ri (7165m) are the mountains we can view from the base camp. We get back to Gorakshep for a good night's rest.

Day 18
Gorakshep-Kala Patthar (5550m) - Pheriche (4240m/14,070ft): 8-10 Hrs

A predawn rises on day 18 for the hike up Kala Patthar to get beautiful views of the sunrise on Mount Everest. The view from this vantage point cannot be understated and can offer memories for a lifetime. After clicking some pictures, we will return back to Gorakshep and enjoy a hearty breakfast. We then walk down towards Pheriche. After passing Thokla Pass we will walk through Phulaji Kala village and finally arrive at Pheriche.

Day 19
Pheriche – Phortse (3810m): 4-5 hrs

Today we walk down towards Phortse by passing beautiful villages like Jamdang, Orsho, Somare, and Pangboche and finally arrive at Phortse. We will visit the beautiful monastery of Pangboche and visit a very large Chorten. In Phortse we will visit Buddhist monasteries which are truly spectacular and full of incredible works of religious art.

Day 20
Phortse–Monjo ((2,835m): 5-6 Hrs

On day 20, we will hike from Phortse to Namche Bazaar, then pass through on our way out of the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint and drop into a lush a green valley. Finally, we arrive in Monjo where we spend the night.

Day 21
Monjo–Lukla (2,780m): 5-6 Hrs

On today’s trek, we will rejoin the Dudh Koshi stream backtracking to Phakding. The last segment of the day takes around 45 minutes to climb to Lukla. Here in Lukla we suggest reconfirming your flight ticket and we will overnight in the hotel here.

Day 22
Lukla–Kathmandu by Air (1,300m): 35-minute flight to Kathmandu

A thirty-five-minute flight will take us back to the Kathmandu and you will be transferred to your hotel to enjoy the day before attending the farewell dinner.

Day 23
Final departure

We'll drive you to the airport so that you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport three hours prior to the time of your flight and bid you a farewell onto your journeys elsewhere.

What Can I Expect on a Trekking Holiday?

Trekking Days are designed so that the walking is enjoyable and safe. Typically, our trekking holidays involves 4 -8 hours of hiking per day, including a lunch stop. The trail varies from easy hiking on the lower elevation to strenuous walking over 5000 meters in the Himalaya Mountains. The day begins early at around 6.30 in the morning with a cup of tea. Before breakfast is the best time to pack your items not needed during the day into duffle bag keeping the essentials or items you wish to access throughout the day in your daypack. After breakfast, we are usually on the trail by 8.00 am. Lunch is around 12 pm and is generally 1-2 hour break. We reach our camp or teahouse by 4 pm as the afternoon walk is generally shorter than the morning. The time from arriving at the teahouse or campsite till dinner is your free time. There is always tea available, and sometimes side trips are available. Dinner is normally served around 7.00 pm. A common misconception is that if you are a slow walker you may hold people back - NOT SO. The group members often string out and there will be an hour or two between the first to arrive and the last. You walk at your own pace and stop when you feel like it. There will be always our trekking Sherpas, guides and porters at the front and the rear ensuring no one gets lost.

Who Are the Trip Leaders and Are They Trained, Qualified, and Experienced?

Himalayan Summit is a professionally managed trekking company based in Nepal, we have a policy of employing competent local trekking group leaders and guides. What Are the Meals Like in the Teahouses?

We offer an open choice menu in our teahouse trekking programs where you can select the food you like for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Your guide is available to assist you with menu selection and is there to ensure the food is hygienic, plentiful and nutritious. Most teahouses offer a variety of rice and noodle dishes, as well as seasonal vegetables. A variety of cereals, bread and egg dishes are generally available for breakfast. Properly boiled water is served for drinking during the breakfast and dinner meals.

What Are the Meals Like When Camping?

We have our own experienced trekking cook on all of our camping trips. We adhere to strict hygienic guidelines to ensure our food served during the camping portion of the trek is properly prepared. To start the day, breakfast consists of a choice of porridge, muesli, and cereal followed by eggs either fried or scrambled eggs with chapattis or bread. Lunch is generally a selection of salad, cooked vegetable dishes, pasta and traditional bread. Dinner is a hearty 3-course meal: soup, followed by a variety of vegetables, meat, rice, and pasta dishes and completed with a simple dessert. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are also provided at all meals. We use as much fresh produce as possible and special diets are regularly catered for. Please communicate any dietary restrictions or special request to our staff when booking your adventure. Properly boiled water is served for drinking.

What is the Teahouse Like? May I Have My Own Room?

We book clean and comfortable teahouses which we have developed long and successful relationships with. Our standard trips are based on twin bedded with shared accommodations. We can book a private room for you if you like, which will incur an additional cost.

How Do I Know the Water on Trek Is Safe to Drink?

We discourage buying plastic bottled water because there is no proper disposal system in place and discarded water bottles cause an environmental and aesthetic concern in the backcountry. Therefore, we will provide properly boiled water to refill your water bottles and when serving hot drinks in camp or at the teahouse. Your guide is very concerned for your health and well-being and thus oversees all water processes.

What Are the Physical Requirements of the Trek?

Fitness is perhaps the key factor in the trek. Most people of average fitness for their age can complete our trekking programs. It is important not only to have the most enjoyable experience but for your safety that you are both medically cleared for our programs by your doctor, and have embarked on a training program prior to leaving on our program. With that said, on all our treks you are encouraged to take your time, set your own pace and enjoy the surroundings. Most first-time trekkers are concerned that they won't keep up. They soon discover that a steady and moderate pace will ensure an enjoyable trek, and have the energy for the duration of the trek. Trekking is not a walking competition. However, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it, and you will have enough energy for extra activities. The best preparation for trekking is a program that includes both cardio exercises with moderate resistance training. It is also helpful to take day hikes at least once a week gradually progressing in distance and elevation gain to simulate some of which you will encounter on the trek.

Are the Staff Well Cared for? 

We are committed to the welfare of our staff from the trek leaders and guides to Sherpas, cooks, and porters. We ensure good wages, salary, and proper insurance. We provide the proper equipment and clothing needed for all our staff, including porters. Each one of our staff is an integral part of our programs.

What Type of Insurance Do I Need?

You need general travel insurance which includes both cancellation insurance, as well as rescue insurance. Read your policy's fine print to make sure it covers you for trekking and/or climbing, depending on what trip you have booked, and that it covers you for helicopter evacuation.

What Happens in the Case of an Emergency?

In the case of a serious medical emergency or in the unlikely event of a casualty, we will coordinate rapid medical evacuation procedures. Since you are entirely liable for all the expenses incurred in any evacuation please make sure that it is covered by your insurance.

I Am Worried About Acute Mountain Sickness

Himalayan Summit trip itineraries have been professionally designed to minimize the effects of high altitude. However, many will feel some basic symptoms of the change in altitude. Your guides are medically trained to know these symptoms and if they are progressing to a more dangerous and serious condition. It is important to be a participant in your own safety and report any ill effects to your guide as soon as possible so they may make assessments as to your condition.  Extensive medical kits are carried on all our trips, and your guides are trained in the use of all the equipment. In addition, we carry a Portable Altitude Chamber which is designed to mimic air pressure at lower altitudes. Our guides are trained in wilderness medicine and adhere to international standards and have a duty of care to you, the client. 

How Do I Know the Trek Is Safe?

Safety is our top priority. All of our trekking group leaders and guides have undertaken the Wilderness First Aid Medical Course and have years of experience in planning, organizing, and executing a well-designed program focused on safety. We carry Portable Altitude Chamber (hyperbaric bag) along with a comprehensive medical kit. We plan adventure travel trips so that safety and comfort are not compromised.

Will I Be Transferred to and from The Airport?

Definitely! Our airport representatives will greet you at the airport to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Do check the Himalayan Summit clipboard on your arrival in Kathmandu airport outside the arrival terminal hall. Make sure you have provided your flight details to us in advance.

Are There Hot Showers During the Trek?

Trekking in Nepal Himalayas is an adventure holiday and thus please do not expect a shower each day. Hot showers are sometimes available, however, we strongly discourage the use of hot water due to the fact that it is usually heated with wood, and deforestation due to tree cutting is an environmental crisis in many Himalayan places. 

How Much Weight am I Carrying on the Trek?

You will be carrying your day pack with warm clothes, drinking water, snacks, sun block, camera and any other personal items you wish to access throughout the day. Generally, your daypack will be around 5 kilograms.

What is the best way to get to Nepal from the US, UK, Australia, NZ?

Most airlines fly directly from many Asian and Middle Eastern countries, however, there are no direct flights from most western countries.

When Should I Arrive in Nepal? 

All our trips itineraries have an arrival and departure day from Kathmandu built in to allow for rest from your journeys on both ends of the programs. You are also welcome and encouraged to arrive a day earlier or leave Nepal a day later to have a look around the vibrant Kathmandu valley. Himalayan Summit arranges airport transfers, hotel bookings or any extra activities as required.

Can I Recharge My Electronic Devices and Camera Batteries During the Trek?

Almost every teahouse has electrical outlets in the rooms for recharging. For camera batteries, there may be a cost of usually about 2-3 US$ per hour for re-charging. We use the 220-240 volts to power their appliances and two point’s plugs are recommended to bring.

Are Trekking Poles Required, or Recommended?

Trekking poles can certainly be helpful. They can help shift some of the stress of descent especially off of your knees and onto your upper body. Many fine trekking poles to be beneficial for the trek, but they are not required.

Can I Buy Trekking Gear in Nepal?

Yes. There are dozens of trekking shops in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. Our trekking guide and representatives will be happy to assist you on this matter if needed.

Will My Mobile Phone Work in Nepal?

If you want to take your phone with you, there is a good chance that it will work in most major cities. Please discuss this with your phone company prior to leaving for your adventure to see what the rates are and if you have an international calling and texting plan. You can also get the local mobile SIM card in Kathmandu.

What Weather Conditions Can I Expect?

It is notoriously difficult to predict the weather condition in the Himalayas. With that said, in general days may be warm and nights are cold. You can expect some snow or rain storms at times. Between 1000 and 3500 meters the temperature could be as high as 20°C to 5°C at the low end. At higher altitudes, the temperature ranges from 20°C to -10°C. During winter it is around 10°C colder. 

How Much Should I Tip?

Tipping is an accepted part of trekking although it is a completely personal matter. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work. Budgeting up to 10 % of the trek is a good estimate.

What is Trekking Peak?

Trekking peaks is a permit classification, and are the least expensive permits for climbing. They are also peaks that have been classified as having the least amount of technical climbing to reach the summit. Generally, these peaks can be done in a day from a high camp to the summit and back to high camp on the same day. The routes we use are chosen for their objective safety, involve easy angled snow slopes, straightforward ridges and occasionally minor scrambling. You will be using crampons, an ice axe, harnesses, fixed ropes, etc. for ascending and descending. We will introduce, review, demonstrate and provide ample time to practice all the skills required for the climbing. Trekking Peaks are carefully designed to deliver an exciting opportunity to climb a Himalayan peak while providing proper acclimatization. These treks are open to fit, determined walkers who have previously undertaken 'strenuous' treks; previous mountaineering experience is an advantage but not essential.
