Tso-Rolpa Lake, situated in Rolwaling valley, is a humongous glacial lake at an altitude of 4580 meters between the Langtang range and the Everest range. Rolwaling valley is known as one of the seven hidden valleys where Yetis are said to reside. Although it is extremely unlikely that you will meet one, the trek in itself is an enthralling one as awe-inspiring views of the Everest range, Langtang range, and Mt. Gaurishankar are the other highlights of the trek beside the lake itself.
The trek is done in the valley of Rolwaling. The route is nearby the Nepal-Tibet border so you might as well get to explore the Tibetan culture. The Buddhist people inhibit majority of the area. You pass through Brahmin, Chhetri, Sherpa and Tamang villages. Your appetite will be whetted with sightseeing in some popular landmarks in the medieval city of Kathmandu which is only the beginning of your adventure. Next up is a bumpy ride to Shingati as you pass through Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi rivers. On your way, you will be accompanied by peaks such as Rolwaling/Melungtse (7181m), and Gaurishankar (7134m). You follow your path along the Tamakoshi River as you pass through several picturesque and quaint villages into the Rolwaling valley, where the tales of the abominable snowman- the Yetis- haunt the imagination of the trekkers, to finally reach the magnificent glacial Tso-Rolpa Lake. The lake is one of the biggest glacial lakes in Nepal and has grown continuously over the last five decades because of glacial melting and threatens to burst through its unstable dam. The difficulties during the trek will be instantly forgotten in awe of the glacial lake surrounded by the magnificent Himalayas. One other highlight of the trek is the Bigu Gompa. Bigu Gompa is a great nunnery institute which once sheltered over 300 nuns. It lies in the village of Bigu. Bigu is a village at the foot of the Rolwaling Himal which is a quaint village where one can explore the local village culture and excellent mountain views. The trek is rated as a difficult trek but the journey and the destination will make the effort and the difficulties an affordable expense. It is a better choice to trek in seasons other than the monsoon and the winter.
The trip has much more to offer besides the quaint villages, mountains, and glaciers. Embarking on a journey to the lake is the only way to find it out. Our friendly and experienced team is ever-present for making your dream journey to the lake possible as well as memorable.
