Upper Dolpa Trek

Located in the Karnali region of Nepal alongside the Tibetan plateau, Upper Dolpa is one of the least developed yet picturesque regions in the country. Upper Dolpa is the shooting location of the famous Oscar nominee movie, The Caravan. As observed in the movie, Upper Dolpa Trek also provides the glimpse of struggles that people in the remote area face in their day-to-day life. Upper Dolpa Trek also provides an opportunity to relish the rugged and scenic beauty of the far-western side of Nepal.

Upper Dolpa Trek is one of the strenuous and off-beaten treks in Nepal. Lack of basic facilities along the trekking route brings hindrances on trekking in this region but bring extreme thrill and joy at the same time. Upper Dolpa is considered the last reserve of pure Tibetan culture left in the entire world. Hence, it’s an opportunity for the trekkers to learn about the sheer Tibetan culture with the majority of locals following pre-Buddhist Bon religion. Upper Dolpa Trek features walking through Shey Phoksundo National Park which covers beautiful valleys, ancient monasteries, and magnificent landscape. The park is also home to varieties of floras and faunas. Another highlight of Upper Dolpa Trek is the deepest lake in Nepal, Shey Phoksundo Lake, which is 145m deep. Shey Phoksundo Lake is also one of the most gorgeous lakes in Nepal. The trekkers will trek through lower Dolpo, many Tibetan settlements, rhododendron and pine forests, and come across Shey Gompa, Jeng La Pass (5090m), Dho Tarap, Sala La Pass (5094m), Nagdalo-La pass (5350m), and many other striking landscapes en route. By the end of the trek, the trekkers will definitely understand the real struggles one has to face in remote areas.
